The present crisis has brought Psalm 91 very much to the fore in our thinking.
We are told that he who abides in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the protection of the Almighty.
That secret place is, of course, the place of prayer – the fellowshipping of God’s Presence.
If we are honest, we have been hearing the call of God’s Spirit to the secret place for years but we have been too busy with our programs, our ministries, our churches, our public image etc.
Now, we are being driven to it and it is a mercy. The proposed quarantines and curfews are, it could be argued, the Lord’s way of using governments to do what we would not do of our own volition, which is to leave our toys and ego-boosting ideas to come face to face with Almighty God in the quiet of our own homes.
It’s interesting that Psalm 91 tells us that immunity from viruses comes by dwelling in the secret place. In a practical way, that is what our national leaders are also saying. We are safer at home. We are safer hiding away.
The answer to this time of great fear is not to fight fear but to redirect it. We should not fear a virus which can kill our mortal bodies but fear the One who can cast us into hell. Again, it’s not about fearing hell but it IS about fearing God.
The great need of the nations is to fear the Lord. Man was born to fear. People will always fear something or someone. That why it is important to fear the Lord; it is the only fear endorsed by heaven.
And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
ISAIAH 2:21 NKJV
We need to go into the secret place of prayer and not come out till we are trembling with the fear of the Lord. This fear is the greatest gift you can give people. We should be spreading this fear everywhere we go – yes, like a virus.
When the plagues hit Egypt, the children of Israel were safe in the land of Goshen. Interestingly, the word Goshen in Hebrew means “drawing near.” We should be drawing near to the Lord in the secret place.
No matter where they come from, plagues want to come near you. By staying safe in the secret place of the Most High, you can keep the plague at bay. As you worship Him and fellowship with Him, you can stay the plague (see 2 Samuel 24:25).
Self-isolation is your invitation to the secret place. Two housebound old ladies turned their home into a fount of revival as they prayed down the Lewis Revival. What can millions of us do if we use self-isolation as an opportunity to spend serious time in the Presence of a holy and fearful God?
